Juanita's Story

A Sanctuary of Care and Nature

Pocket Garden was founded in 2020 by Juanita, inspired by her personal and professional experiences. As a full-time medical hospitalist caring for acutely ill patients, she faced the dual challenges of managing the mental and physical stresses of her demanding role while also being a devoted mother and family member. This firsthand experience made her keenly aware of the toll stress and self-neglect can take on your life.

Her Love of Plants and Nature

Juanita also noticed similar challenges among her patients, where stressful lives led to self-neglect, significantly affecting overall health and quality of life. Seeking grounding and restoration, she turned to plants and nature. Watching a new leaf unfurl and nurturing small green pots on her windowsill became a daily ritual of mindfulness, a sanctuary from the high-stress demands of the hospital. She understood that true wellness extends beyond the lack of physical illness, encompassing mental health and intentional self-care.

How Pocket Garden Began

Propagating Hope

Driven by these insights, Juanita founded Pocket Garden in 2020 to promote self-care and empower individuals and our community to prioritize both mental and physical well-being. What started as small flea market displays in Washoe County and hand-propagating cuttings on her windowsill soon grew. She saw that other local Nevada families were looking for the same grounding green sanctuary, prompting her to open our Sparks boutique nursery.

Juanita experienced a profound sense of community engagement while serving as a frontline healthcare provider during the COVID-19 pandemic at the hospital where the first U.S. COVID-19 case was diagnosed. During this once-in-a-century global healthcare crisis, she witnessed the transformative power of community support. The unwavering encouragement from the local Sparks and Reno community during such challenging times gave her and her medical team the strength and resilience to navigate the situation.
